Well, it's all go on the musical front here. As well as a new Dem13 EP in the works, along with a possible mixtape too, it seems I'm now well into a new solo EP as well. This one actually has it's origins in the summer of 2022, when I started a project titled "Feral Microbes". The original musical concept was some really messed up FX-heavy breaks, along with a very limited set of synths, using either my Korg NTS-1, the Modal Cobalt 5S, a virtual modular synth called Cardinal or some DIY synth patch instruments I made in Renoise. The impetus originally died out cos I hated the breaks, and past experience tells me that actually basing songs around the NTS-1 is an arse-ache, and then the Cobalt died in a terrible switching-on accident, and I realised that modular synths are a perverse waste of time. Although there was a second attempt at the project in September 2023 (which was around the time of the Cobalt's demise) it had still only produced one and a half tracks.
However, in working on the Dem13 record, there's a few beat ideas I've come up with that would actually fit Feral Microbes better, so I've reclaimed (and sped up) one of them and written a couple of other ideas. I've more or less abandoned the original planned restrictions, and am just focusing on breaks and synths generally. The upshot of this is that I've now got three finished tracks, another three which are at least 50% finished, plus at least one fragmentary idea, and it's all sounding pretty fun. I'm not entirely sure what the scale of this project is going to be. If there's already half-a-dozen tracks more or less done, then that should comfortably be an EP, but I don't know how they sit together in terms of running order, so it may be that I need to write several more tracks, in which case it's looking more like a short album...? We'll see. I'm not setting any kind of schedule for finishing this project, as right now Dem13 is my priority (hopefully we should be having our first recording session later today). Probably it'll be released later this summer.
