I've just watched an old Werner Herzog documentary from 2004 called The White Diamond. It's about a man called Graham Dorrington and his dream of building an airship to explore the jungle canopies of Guyana. It's a really beautiful film. There are several sequences in it which literally caused my jaw to drop: the reflection of this huge waterfall in a single drop of water, the astonishing close-ups of various wild animals... Dorrington too is a fantastic subject: highly articulate, even poetic, and with a remarkably expressive manner in conveying his enthusiasm and his struggles working through past trauma. He is a very Herzogian figure: as likeable as he is, there's clearly some obsessive madness just beneath the surface of his geeky, boyish charm. One of the hired locals, Marc Anthony Yhap, is also an engaging and intriguing figure: a diamond miner with a thoughtful, poetic streak of his own (he came up with the film's title) and he makes for a great pairing with Dorrington. There were several times throughout the film when I found myself grinning broadly, and reflecting on what extraordinary and wonderful creatures humans can be. I'd highly recommend watching it. Great film.
